RE: Dehydrator

I make my own jerky from london broil. I wait until it goes on sale and then buy alot of it! Remember for every pound of jerky - you need 3 pounds of fresh meat. I have done the banana chips - you have to let them dry a loooong time to get them crispy. The boys love it when I make homemade fruit snacks (leather). Srawberries, raspberries and blackberries blended together - very tart, but they love it. I have added applesauce to tone it down, but they like it better "sour".

RE: Grandparents and child custody

It's hard to make an informed opinion on what was provided. A one-sided journalists story - could be just that - One-sided. Now as for my opinion as to an age that people can "parent or grandparent" - I think no age can be assigned as there are horrible, abusive parents in their 20's just as there are ill people in their 50's, 60's and 70's. Each case has to be based on its own merits by an impartial judge (which in the case cited, seems like the judge is not impartial). I happen to know of several children being raised by grandparents and thank goodnes for them. Their parents were miserable parents and the children are much better off with the grandparents.

RE: Eating out is out for awhile

I HATE buffets!! I find them disgusting with people / kids reaching over the food with their grubby hands, they are filled with the WORST foods imaginable. Some have a decent salad bar, but the meats are usually fatty and they serve alot of carb filled and fried foods so that you will fill up on those, rather than the more expensive healthier foods. Mind you, I am no health nut or vegetarian! I enjoy a good burgera and fries. I also wonder how long the food has been waiting there for you to come place it on your plate - and if they just brought it out, how long was it under a heat lamp or in a steam table in the kitchen. "they are filled with the worst foods imaginable."? Holy smokes, you need to get out more. Some of the best buffets we eaten, are in Las Vegas. We've had some of the most wonderful prime rib, ham, roast beef, chicken not to mention salads and delicious desserts you can imagine. :p Barb We get out quite a bit - and have been to the buffets in Vegas - some have good food - some not so good (and the prices are about the same). I still have issues with food being left out with other customers leaning over it - just a personal thing. Especially when I see some person EATING in the line.....EEEEEEEWWWW!!! This happened in a more pricy buffet in Vegas that DH talked me into going to.... I'll stick to the foods that get cooked to order and "hopefully" only the cooks and waitress have been near. I have waitressed, so I know the restaurant horror stories (could tell a few myself!)

RE: Eating out is out for awhile

I was with my DH, FIL and dh's best friend 20 years ago and we were asked to leave Sizzler....they had taken the "all you can eat shrimp" to a new level. Mind you, these are some big guys, but it was rather embarassing. They had a mound of shrimp tails quite high on the table.

RE: Lap-Band Procedure - Decide To Do It

While I haven't been on here for some time, I caught this thread as it pertains to me. I had gastric bypass 8 years ago (not many people know it!) I have lost 110 lbs and gained back about 10. From experience, there are several things that rapid weight does: 1. hair loss - it eventually grows back (unless it wasn't there to begin with!) 2. gray skin (for awhile, until you stop losing so quickly) 3. bad fingernails (I still have problems) 4. dumping - yes, it is a true thing and it does suck! Just had it happen again on Fri (wish my boss would stop buying Jack in the box milkshakes for all of us on Fridays) 5. There are foods that I just cannot eat (certain dairy like ice cream - need to be very near a bathroom) 6. There are some very personal adjustments too - such as body image, personality issues. I did not lose as much weight as I would have liked to, but I am also not unhealthy. Alot of people that I know that have had this surgery are unhealthy. I am a size 12 - down from a 24. I no longer have problems standing for long periods of time. If anyone has any questions, please do not hesitate to pm me.

RE: Naming Your Child

friend of my hubby's named their three boys Jaden, Jaren and Jalen (guess they weren't very imaginative.) another friend's ex named his next kids: Pony Boy (from the book), Gypsy Blue and Whiskey Jean (because she was conceived in the parking lot of the casino named Whiskey Jeans)

RE: zuchinni

I cooked this last night for dinner. I've seen variations of this of on Bisquick boxes and in the Baltimore Sun. Very yummy! Baked Zucchini 4 cups chopped unpeeled zucchini 1 cup Bisquick mix 1/2 cup finely chopped onion 1/2 cup finely shredded mixed Italian cheeses (parmesan, asiago, mozzarella, provolone, etc.) 2 teaspoons dried parsley 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon season all 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano leaves (or Italian seasoning) 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 garlic clove, finely chopped 1/2 cup olive oil 4 eggs, slightly beaten (or 1 cup egg substitute) 1. Heat oven to 350ºF. Grease bottom and sides of rectangular pan, 13x9x2 inches. 2. Stir together all ingredients. Spread in pan. 3. Bake about 25-28 minutes or until golden brown. I also made one similar to this last night except I use 1 cup of cheddar cheese (instead of italian cheeses), 5 eggs (instead of 4), garlic salt (instead of seasonall), and I added a handful (probably a cup) of bacon bits.

RE: Looking for opinions on Front Load Washers

I have the Kenmore H3 - I love it! I did not buy the thing that they stand on - for the extra $500 I can bend over for a few years! We bought ours at a Sears Outlet - the only thing wrong with it is it has a small dent in the side that never gets seen - saved $400. I have to buy the he type soap - that keeps it from oversudsing.

RE: Worst dish mom made?

meatloaf with wheat germ in it...Mom decided we were going to start eating healthy and grabbed a jar of wheat germ (unknowingly expired) and added to the meatloaf....ugh - disgusting! After one bite, we ordered pizza! I was never a fan of meatloaf to begin with - after that I don't think I have eaten it since!

RE: Harvey Korman

My uncle, who was a bit player on the Carol Burnett Show, was very good friends with Harvey Korman and Tim Conway. Unfortunately, Uncle Brad died in the 80's - but I will never forget the stories he used to tell of the three of them hanging out together. RIP Mr. Korman....thanks for the memories you shared with Uncle Brad.

RE: Okay -- American Idol

My prediction: David Archuleta to win the whole thing .... although I like several others very much, I think he has what it takes to win this competition. hmmm...I think I may hve been correct!!! Actually I prefer David Cook, but I think the judges were trying to sway the voting public towards Archuleta.
